How to stay connected to Social Media while traveling

Are you ready for one of my greatest travel hacks? As a travel content creator, it is important for me to stay connected and share some parts of my travel while it’s happening. For many of you, this is important too - I mean, we want to see you having a good time traveling! But the issue is that if you’re in another country, you might not have phone service. One option is to purchase an international phone plan with your internet provider. Depending on how much you travel, those can be expensive. I have an alternative:

  1. Go to a local supermarket and purchase a local phone chip. In my experience, these have been super cheap, around $10-20. The local phone chip will give you a local phone number. (Keep in mind that your phone needs to be unlocked/open in order for you to temporarily change to a local phone/internet service provider).

  2. Along with the phone chip, you’ll also need to buy a top up card - I usually get data only, but some come with phone minutes as well. (If I want to make a phone call, I’ll just use WhatsApp). The amount you purchase is entirely up to you. I usually buy them in increments of $5 or $10 depending on how much gigabytes of data I want, which is commensurate with the length of my trip and how much posting I plan on doing. If you run out of data, you can always top up your data with another card.

  3. Load the data (and/or minutes) onto your phone. Follow the instructions on the back of the top up card to activate the data (and/or minutes) load it onto your phone. There’s typically instructions on the back of the card for troubleshooting if you have issues.

And voila - you’re online! It’s THAT easy! Check out my Instagram Reels video below for a recap!

Happy posting!
